Abstract

This study aimed to compare personality traits, creativity, and job motivation among employees with and without internet gaming addiction. This causal-comparative study was conducted among male employees of Media Tabligh Company in Tehran Province. The sample consisted of 200 employees selected through convenience sampling and classified into two equal groups: 100 employees with internet gaming addiction and 100 employees without internet gaming addiction. Data were collected using the Whang and Chang Online Game Addiction Questionnaire, the NEO Five-Factor Inventory, the Torrance Creativity Questionnaire, and Herzberg’s Job Motivation Questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using SPSS through independent-samples t-tests, univariate analysis of variance, and multivariate analysis of variance. The independent-samples t-test showed a significant difference between the two groups in conscientiousness, t(198)=-4.69, p<.001, and neuroticism, t(198)=3.856, p<.001. However, no significant group differences were found in openness to experience, t(198)=0.252, p=.801, extraversion, t(198)=0.861, p=.390, or agreeableness, t(198)=-0.047, p=.962. The multivariate analysis of variance also confirmed significant effects of internet gaming addiction on conscientiousness, F=22.040, η²=.100, and neuroticism, F=14.870, η²=.070. Creativity differed significantly between the two groups, as indicated by the independent-samples t-test, t(198)=-5.698, p<.001, and univariate analysis of variance, F=32.464, η²=.141. Job motivation also showed a statistically significant difference between the two groups, t(198)=-13.266, p<.001, with the analysis of variance confirming a strong effect of internet gaming addiction on job motivation, F=175.989, η²=.471. The findings indicate that internet gaming addiction is associated with lower conscientiousness, creativity, and job motivation, as well as higher neuroticism among employees. In contrast, openness to experience, extraversion, and agreeableness did not differ significantly between employees with and without internet gaming addiction. These results highlight the need for organizations to identify behavioral addiction symptoms among employees and implement preventive, educational, counseling, and psychological interventions to reduce the occupational and mental health consequences of internet gaming addiction.
